Shoulder Pain IS discouraging
If you’ve been dealing with one or more shoulder issues, you know how discouraging, irksome and agitating they can be. Maybe it is your rotator cuff, or a tug between where the shoulder and neck intersect, or a chronic tightness or stiffness in and around your shoulder.
No matter how it is showing up, despite all of your best efforts at following the many common instructions from yoga teachers, other health professionals or YouTube, you aren't making the progress you want to make.

a lot of people believe that shoulder issues stem from postural issues
There is such a strong belief that if you take the time and effort to change your posture, your shoulder pain will go away.
So you pull your shoulders back and tuck your chin, and while you may notice some change, some relief, the change isn't long lasting.
There is an explanation for this . . . . while the dynamics of our posture do impact a lot of what we feel through the shoulder girdle and related structures. . . . there is more to the story.
YOUR SHOULDERS AND HIPS ARE DEPENDENT ON EACH OTHER
Take a look at this image of the latissmus dorsi.
It is one that I love to share with my clients when teaching them about the connection between the shoulders and hips.
You can clearly see how there is a connection to the shoulder blade and to the upper arm bone as well well as to the pelvis and sacrum.
I am showing it because if the pelvis or sacrum are not functioning well they can have an impact on how the shoulder girdle functions and feels.
You can pull your shoulders back as much as you want, but if your pelvis or hips have limited mobility or stability they can impact the way the shoulders function.
This is good news
Because it means that when you deliberately and specifically free up how your hips and pelvis functions . . .
. . . . and then connect that to the work you are doing around the shoulder girdle
So much can change.

I have worked with a lot of people to help them get out of pain, and then get back to the activities they love. So often people come to me because they have made some gains with what they have been taught by other teachers, trainers and health professionals, but they are struggling with how to make those sustainable and more long lasting. My skill and talent are at helping people make the connections to what they can't feel so they can incorporate all that they have learned for sustainable change.
I am Susi Hately, Your instructor
I have a BSC. Kinesiology and have been helping people reduce and eradicate pain for almost 30 years.
I blend science-based biomechanics and anatomy with the ancient wisdom of yoga to help my clients gain awareness and clarity on how their body is communicating with them.
This integration of body and mind has enabled be to be a bridge between the medical world and yoga. Two of my programs have been studied at the University of Calgary (one on cancer recovery and another on idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis) and both showed benefit for supporting people and their wellbeing.
My clients are or have been active and want to get back to being active again. And my clients range in the level of activity they do - some are elite level like the Olympic Luge or Speed Skating teams. Others love weekend skiing, regular bike riding or running. Others want to get back to quilting, photography and other hobbies that require good shoulder girdle function.
Many sit behind computers, run businesses and want to enjoy it all. They have sought me out because they all want to feel better, move better, and just back to the life they want to live.
I had an ongoing shoulder issue for a few years that was progressively getting worse.
It began causing chronic pain in practically every muscle of my shoulder but mainly my jaw, SCM and pec minor origin. I had tried so many things and after doing your exercises my shoulder pain is gone!!

- We’ll explore the anatomy and biomechanics of the shoulders, rib cage, spine and hips and how they work together.
- Learn about how your shoulders are functioning AND how other parts of your body are contributing to the limitation of you are feeling in your shoulders. Most of they way we move occurs outside of our awareness. When you can tune into how you are moving overall, you can retrain and optimize your movement patterns.
